KUALA LUMPUR: Political parties need to set aside their differences when offering humanitarian aid, especially when helping the people of Palestine, said a non-governmental organisation.
AQSA Syarif chairman Assoc Prof Dr Hafidzi Mohd Noor said humanitarian aid for volatile countries requires cooperation from all levels of the community, regardless of their political inclination.
"If political members or personalities join us, it shows their willingness to join our efforts by putting their flags aside in fighting for Palestine," he said during Bernama Radio24's 'Dalam Radar' programme here today.
Hafidzi said humanitarian aid missions should not be politicised because its success depended on contributions from all quarters.
The involvement of political personalities with NGOs is considered good because they are able to set aside their political differences for the interest of Islam, he said, when asked to comment on allegations that there were activities promoting political parties when carrying out humanitarian aid missions to Gaza recently, which was exposed through blogs and social websites.
On the participation of celebrities in the humanitarian aid mission recently, he said it was a phenomenon that should be prided.
He said it was a positive development in championing the Palestine issue which was rapidly gaining attention, and not for the sake of popularity.
Hafidzi said local artists were icons who could help to increase public awareness through sharing their experience.
Touching on the humanitarian aid mission to Gaza recently, he said AQSA Syarif has channeled RM3.2 million in contributions with 18 volunteers comprising members from the media as well as AQSA Syarif ambassador, Afdlin Shauki and Vision Works crew.
The mission was the second of four planned following the eight-day large-scale attacks launched by Israel on Palestine, he added. Bernama.
